Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what we're most often asked — operation, maintenance, spare parts and Q4700 replacement.

General

How often does a gamma source need to be replaced?

It depends on the isotope and the application’s signal requirements. For Cs-137 (30-year half-life), recharges are typically planned every 15–25 years. For Am-241 (432 years), much less frequently. See Recharging for the process description.

Is it dangerous to have a gamma source in the process?

Under normal operation, radiation levels around the installation are negligible — the capsule and geometry ensure the beam is directed only at the detector. More detail on the radiation safety and regulations page.

What do I do if the measurement drifts or looks wrong?

Start with a check of detector, electronics and calibration. If that doesn’t solve it, book a service visit — contact us with model, serial number and a brief description of the fault.

Are installation manuals available for download?

Yes. NT14-1.3 Gamma level indicator — Installation Bruksanvisning and Unirad Serie Q4700 Dokumentation & manual are available. Contact us and we’ll email or link the documents directly.

Q4700-specific

Is the Philips/Unirad Q4700 still manufactured?

No, the Q4700 has long been discontinued. Spare parts are hard to come by. We offer a drop-in replacement based on the NT14-1.3 — and because our business has historical ties to both Philips and Unirad Instrument AB, we know the system inside out.

Do we have to redo the cabling when replacing a Q4700?

No. The NT14-1.3 replacement is designed to fit the existing mounting and keep the same cable connection. In most cases it’s enough to swap the unit and recalibrate.

How long does the old source last when the unit is replaced?

The source is generally independent of the measurement electronics — it continues to function even after the electronics are replaced. We evaluate the activity during the pre-study and recommend recharging if the level is too low.

What does a Q4700 replacement cost?

The price depends on isotope, existing mounting and whether recharging is included. Call or email us for a no-cost pre-study on site or based on documentation.

NT14-specific

What interface does the NT14-1.3 have?

4–20 mA for continuous indication, plus alarm relays for high/low level. Modbus RTU/TCP is available as an option.

Can the NT14 be remotely diagnosed?

Yes — with the remote diagnostics option, status and alarms can be read without a site visit.

Can the NT14 be installed without stopping the process?

In most cases yes, especially for externally mounted systems. We agree on installation windows with your operations manager.

Source services

Can Nuklidtech take care of our spent sources?

Yes. We perform decommissioning with transport to an authorised final recipient and issue receipts for your journal.

Do you transport the material yourselves?

Yes, we hold our own ADR Class 7 authorisation and carry out transport in-house. This simplifies planning, documentation and invoicing.

Can’t find your answer?

Call us or send an email and we’ll get back to you the same business day.
