The regulatory backbone
- The Radiation Protection Act (2018:396) and associated ordinance
- SSM regulations (SSMFS) — licensing, journal-keeping, decommissioning
- ADR-S (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) — transport of radioactive material, Class 7
- The Work Environment Act — dose limits for personnel working with sources
Who is responsible for what
As the licence holder, the customer owns and is responsible for the radiation source from installation through to final disposal. The licence holder keeps the source journal, reports to SSM and provides a radiation safety officer on site.
As supplier and service provider, Nuklidtech is responsible for ensuring that work is performed under the applicable licence, that radiation safety measures are documented, and that transport is carried out under ADR Class 7.
What this means in practice
- Before installation — we request the customer’s licence and verify that the facility is authorised to handle the intended isotope and activity.
- During installation — radiation safety surveys are carried out, documented and handed to the customer’s radiation safety officer.
- At recharge — notification to SSM, transport of new and spent sources under ADR Class 7.
- At decommissioning — the source is handed to an authorised recipient; receipts are archived by both the customer and by us.
Dose exposure under normal operation
Industrial gamma sources are encapsulated and mounted so that radiation is directed only toward the detector. Dose levels around the installation are negligible under normal operation — in practice unmeasurable beyond a few centimetres from the source window.
Control measurements are carried out during installation and at every service visit, and documented in the facility’s radiation safety journal.
Why this matters
Even though dose levels are low in normal operation, all of the above assumes the installation is correct, the source has not been damaged, and procedures are maintained. That’s why the choice of service provider matters — and why we keep our own Class 7 safety adviser in the organisation.
